Media - Sansationalism or Journalism

Every news channel you watch these days has everything to show 24 hours a day except 'news'.Everything these days is market driven and these channels are also trying to sell their products. On Indian television, every so-called news channel is trying to outshine others by showing something unique and 'breaking'.They don't bother about the authenticity of the content they are showing.Rather they try to show them in a sensational manner, to attract more and more viewers to there channel.
Actually they are not showing news at all. All day long they are showing magic shows, comedy shows, extracts of reality shows, and some other bizzare acts and things happening all over the world. These channels are more 'entertainment channels' and less 'news channels'. The actual news content on these channels is less then 10%.
In the coming days these channels are certainly going to loose the charm, because viewers will soon loose interest in such hopeless things shown by them( I am even unable to call them programs). This short term and cheap popularity will not be helpful for a news channel in the long run. There are more than two dozen news channels operational in India. And I am sure that if they will not try to rectify their content, most of them will vanish in the coming years.
This is a pure play of TRP(Television Rating Point). This shows the popularity of a TV channel among viewers. However the authenticity of their way of data collection and other ways of statistics has come under scanner and most of the time it is found that the so called TRP is not at all free from bias.I can give you many points which can easily suggest you that TRP is not at all the representative of viewership habbits at national level.
#There are only 7000(approx.) households in India, where the TRP meters are insalled, which of course can not represent the whole country.
#The households where such meters are insalled are in very posh areas of big cities like Delhi and Mumbai. which ultimately can't be a representative of the entire country's population.
#It is also a fact that TRP meters can easily be tampered.
#The organisation who is conducting such TRP try to influence the viwership by offering prizes to the viewers(most of them are sponsered by TV chennels).
There are some other criticisms of TRP. But all this will satisfy you that TRP is folly.
But this is the root of all the problems. These Private TV channels rely on Advertisement for there revenues. And Companies and business houses are give their advertisements on those channels which are having high TRP rating.
The D-graded content on TV channel doesn't shows that the viwership is too poor in quality. We should also remember that whatever the TV channels will show, will be watched by a number of viewers. So it is the duty of TV channels that they should show quality programmes especially News.
More or less the so called National TV channel-Doordarshan should take the initiative which has always been used to voice the views of the ruling political parties. They are unable to deliver their duties towards the nation and public at large. So there is a tendency of people to have less trust on the Sarkari TV channel. This vacuum is now filled by these private channels and what they are doing and showing is not hidden from any one. The sarkari tv channel should become the benchmark for the others like BBC has done in Britain.
